VLC is a registered Independent School set up to provide education for those who struggle to access mainstream education. Driven by a caring and inclusive ethos, we believe that every child’s life can be transformed through a caring approach to education.
All staff are committed to their roles in ensuring the very best provision for every pupil in our care no matter what their need. Students’ needs can be met most effectively when teachers, parents and support agencies are carefully coordinated to result in joint working.
Our whole school (including our alternative provision, Arise and Harbour programmes) has a shared responsibility to monitor the progress of all students, to identify needs and when they arise, therefore allowing us to provide the appropriate targeted support. Every pupil who attends VLC has a bespoke APDR plan, informed by the EHCP (where relevant), recommendations from an Educational Psychologist (where relevant), information from current and previous educational settings, information from other professionals and our own baselines.

what is send?
A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.
A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:
If you believe your child has a special educational need, learning difficulty or disability which has not been identified then please make contact with our SEND team to talk about your concerns. You can do this by calling the main school line and asking to speak to the SENDCo.
A child of compulsory school age or a young person has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:
- has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age, or
- has a disability which prevents or hinders him or her from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools or mainstream post-16 institutions

All staff have a good awareness of SEND. As a team of Centre Leaders and (HL)TAs there is a wide range of experience and expertise in supporting students with SEND.
Our SENDCo (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator) is Jo Price (BA, PGCE, NSA). She has a background working as a Teaching Assistant in a Special School, then qualified as a teacher in 2000. Joanne has worked in three different secondary schools in the role of Teacher, Head of KS3 History, SENDCo, Assistant Principal and as the Lead for a Resourced Provision for students with complex needs and barriers to accessing mainstream education settings. She has been a SENCo since 2007 and successfully completed the National SENCo Award in 2010. Jo is committed to ensuring that all students’ needs are met.
